- Doepfer A-114
- Dual Ring Modulator@+Module A-114 contains two separate ring modulators. A ring modulator supplies the product, or multiplication ( X * Y) of the signals at the inputs X and Y at the output. The difference between a ring modulator and a VCA is that both input voltages can be positive and / or negative and the product will appear positive at the output (4-quadrant -Multiplication). The VCA, on the other hand, allows only positive voltages for the control input (2-quadrant multiplication). The ring modulation is thus an amplitude modulation amplified to positive and negative input voltages. On the frequency side, the AM supplies both the carrier frequency fC as well as two side bands (fC-fM, fCfM) per spectral component of the carrier and modulation signal. On the other hand, the carrier frequency is missing in the output product during ring modulation. A ring modulator is used, for example, for producing bell-like sounds or for speech alienation.
