- The Golden Age Audio R1A Premier is a ribbon microphone with top-of-the-range components such as a Lundahl transformer and Mogami cabling. Thanks to its active circuit, the R1A has a high output, comparable to that of a condenser microphone. So you can record even soft instruments and voices without a very expensive preamp. The active electronics also have the advantage that the impedance is much lower than with passive ribbon microphones. With only 200 ohms, you can easily use cables of tens of metres. Finally, the R1A also has handy gadgets on board that make it even more versatile. Ribbon mics are known for boosting low frequencies considerably if you place the mic close to the sound source.
