Product Fundamentals
  • Choose the right material for you Many string makers put a lot of care and thought into the materials for their strings. Larsen is no exception. The A string in this set is made of a solid steel core and has rolled stainless steel flat wire wound around the core. These strings come with either a ball end or loop end depending on your violas tailpiece. The lower three strings have a multi-filament nylon core. Synthetic cores like this are often used for their similarity in tone to gut while also being stable in different temperatures or humidities. The D string is wound with precision rolled aluminium flat wire and the G and C strings are wound with pure silver. These materials are chosen for their combination of tone colours and deliver a warm sound. In particular silver is excellent for the lower strings due to the dark tone quality silver possesses. Larsen offers their viola A string in three tensions if you prefer a quicker response for your top string then the light tension will be a good option for your set up. The rest are offered in two tensions medium and heavy. If you want a darker tone with a harder bow response then a heavy tension will be a great tension for you. Larsen Strings Larsen began in 1990 when Laurits Th. Larsen was tasked with obtaining 300 strings for a colleague. Larsen decided to make the strings himself in his garage. In 18 months his first cello A string was produced. Since then Larsen has expanded producing strings for violin and viola as well as cello. Larsen provides their strings in a packaged envelope like many strings. What sets Larsen apart is that they are embossed and sealed in their envelopes ensuring the authenticity and quality of each string from Larsen. Whats at Gear4music?
