- The Ortofon ST-7 is an MC transformer that serves as a useful asset for Moving Coil (MC) cartridge owners. MC transformers are designed to maximise the efficiency of both the cartridge and the phono stage. As a result of their design MC cartridges exhibit a lower output than Moving Magnet cartridges. This necessitates a higher gain from a phono stage for standard listening levels on your audio system.Unlike phono stages which have a steady resistive input impedance MC transformers possess an input impedance that varies with frequency. These transformers are passive thereby minimising the effects of external electrical forces on the cartridges low output signal.
