- Variations available Oliv violin D-strings come with a silver-only wound variation this provides extra warmth to the sound that you might prefer on your D-string. This string is available in multiple gauges so you can choose the right tension string. Choose the perfect tension Pirastros gut strings come in multiple amounts of tension for each string. This is different from the metal and synthetic core strings which usually have three tension levels. Gut strings by Pirastro are measured in PM (Pirastro Measurements) 1 PM is equivalent to 0.05mm diameter so a 14 PM string is 0.7mm in diameter. Strings tend to be measured in 0.25 PM increments this results in a 3% change in tension for every 0.25 PM. Oliv violin strings are all measured in PM except the E string which is measured in three tension levels similar to standard strings Dünn (slim) Mittel (medium) and Stark (heavy). The rest of the strings use PM. The A-string has a range of 13.25 PM to 14 PM the D-string ranges from 16.25 PM to 17 PM (13.5 to 14.25 with silver wound variant) and the G-string has a range of 15.25 PM to 16.25 PM.
