- Materials All the strings in this set have a rope steel core which consists of multiple strands of steel intertwined into a strong yet flexible "rope". They are wound with chrome steel which provides warmth and power. Chrome steel also known as stainless steel is widely used in string manufacturing for its durability durability and louder volume. This is perfect for the double bass as it is often a quiet instrument and needs a lot of volume if a player wants to be heard prominently. Extra strings As well as the standard orchestral and solo strings in the sets. Pirastro also produce strings for bassists with different configurations on their instrument. If your bass has a low C extension fitted then the 2.1m E string is the string for you.
