- re actually looking at one of the early ancestors of the mobile phone. Way back, the slit drum was used as a remote communication device across Africa, South East Asia, and Oceania. By cleverly placing it in a valley or by a river, its message-carrying notes can be heard for miles, providing a tech free mode of communication. This tuned percussive instrument has a full and warm sound shaped by a wooden cabinet with eight tongues of varying thickness and length routed into the top surface. By striking these tongues with a mallet, eight different notes can be played to weave rhythmic melodies and beat sequences. The Schlagwerk 60D85 Slitdrum has been crafted using African padouk wood and measures 60cm wide, 20cm long, and 18cm high.
