Product Fundamentals
  • Materials chosen carefully The materials can have a great effect on the sound a string produces. This is why string makers will design their strings to produce certain timbres or to complement certain instruments. Dominants are no exception all cello Dominants have a synthetic core which is preferred for its similarity to gut in tone but unlike gut it holds its tuning more reliably and is more durable. All the strings are wound with chromium-nickel steel (chrome). Pure chromium is brittle and not conducive to string making so Thomastik adds nickel to allow for string making. The resultant sound is darker than other materials and much better for the range that the cello occupies. Silver wound C and G strings (full-size instruments only) are also available as alternative strings to the standard chrome wound strings. These are available as individual strings and provide a little less darkness than the chrome wound strings. This is ideal if your instrument is naturally quite dark and you want to brighten up the strings a little bit. Sizing your strings These strings are available in sizes from full size (4/4) all the way down to 1/8 size. Such a variety is quite uncommon on strings often seen in professional circles and makes these strings accessible to all players. Thomastik stresses the importance of getting the correct size and recommends you check your instruments measurements before purchasing your strings. Thomastik measures their strings according to vibrating string length. Measuring this is simple you measure from the nut (top of the fingerboard) to where the strings meet the bridge. This is the length of the string that freely vibrates so therefore is the vibrating string length. Cellos are usually pretty uniform with their sizing unlike violas and basses but it is always a good idea to check your instruments measurements in this way to ensure that you can find the string size that matches your instrument as closely as possible.
