- Variations to suit both you and your instrument To help you get the most out of your strings Thomastik have included variations of the E string and D string. The E string with a stainless steel core is available with a gold plating or a platinum plating. Platinum plating provides a darker and more focused sound that is ideal for instruments which naturally tend to be a little brighter in their sound. Gold is ideal for instruments with a darker sound. The E string is also available with a carbon steel core with tin plating. This is even darker than the platinum-plated E string again this is perfect for brighter instruments. The D string is available with an aluminium winding over the synthetic core. This has a brighter sound with a superior bow response. Like with the E strings this is great for darker sounding instruments. The sets that Peter Infelds are sold in both contain the standard A and G strings with the silver wound D string. The set PI100 contains the platinum plated E string and the set PI101 contains the tin plated E string. Whats at Gear4music?
